In association
with Celebrate Fremont,
The Fremont Freewheelers Bicycle Club
2006 criterium was held at a new
downtown location based at Fremont City
Hall.
It was a
pretty exciting day at the Celebrate Fremont
Criterium!
The Liberty Street area was buzzing with
activity by 6am. Race team members, Fremont
Freewheelers Club members, city street crew,
and PD officers were all working together as
if it were the 10th annual race. Meticulous
planning, teamwork, and the mild weather
laid the foundation for a beautiful day of
cycling. Each of the ten races started at
the scheduled time (pretty impressive) and
during the course of each race, the race
announcer talked about Celebrate Fremont
with some bits of history of our community.
A tremendous and exciting day of cycling!
There were over 500 cyclists racing in 10
categories. The Pro/Am race had close to 100
riders. A small but energetic crowd
anxiously watched as the cyclists crowded
around the hairpin turn and accelerating
back to a top speed of 30 mph.
An exhausting and exhilarating day for the
Fremont Freewheelers racing team. At the end
of the day, Richard Brockie, race team
captain, said that he appreciates the
support from Celebrate Fremont in staging
the race in downtown Fremont. This new venue
has not only enhanced the club's annual
event, but has brought a new challenging
course to the NorCal cycling circuit.
