Fremont
residents attending the public planning
meeting at Fremont Main Library on Jan.
31were among the first to learn that New
United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI)
will contribute $10,000 to the city's 50th
anniversary celebration. Announcement of the
gift follows Fremont city council's decision
last week to provide $10,000 in seed funding
in order to encourage contributions from the
private sector.
"We are delighted to receive such
substantial early support from the business
community," said Irene Koehler, chair of the
executive steering committee for the event.
"We hope this will prompt other businesses
to sign on now as well. Early contributions
make it much easier to plan well."
"Fremont joined us in celebrating NUMMI's
20th anniversary last year," said NUMMI
spokesperson Rhonda Rigenhagen. "We are
pleased to return the favor by providing
$10,000 in seed money for the city's 50th
anniversary celebration."
Approximately 100 attendees at the Jan.
31meeting also witnessed the unveiling of
the anniversary logo and signed up for the
committees and teams that will plan and
implement the anniversary festivities over
the next year. It was the second meeting in
which interested residents gathered to
contribute ideas for the occasion. The
initial meeting took place Jan. 6, from
which a steering committee and an
organizational structure have emerged, along
with an array of potential projects and
activities.
